My French friend, who is definitely nowhere near the political right, has clearly laid out her concerns about the direction in whichFrench society is going. Ten percent on the population are Islam followers and this is happening from the inside, as their population grows while indigenous French are choosing not to have large families. She says that if Le Pen is voted in this could easily unleash massive civil unrest which would destroy French society as we know it. Furthermore she believes that if nothing changes politically then the process of islamification will continue apace. Hobson's choice.
I enjoyed the interview, but feel I must correct Francis' claim that these riots are a new phenomenon. To save him and others the effort, here is what Google tells us about Keith Blakelock, at a time when I was living in Leeds and saw rioting there
"PC Keith Blakelock was a London Metropolitan Police constable who was murdered on 6 October 1985 during the Broadwater Farm riots in Tottenham, North London. He was 40 years old and was assigned to protect firefighters when he became separated from his unit and was attacked by a mob of approximately 50 rioters armed with knives and machetes.
Blakelock suffered over 40 injuries, including a six-inch knife buried in his neck, and died from his wounds. The riot was sparked by the death of Cynthia Jarrett, who suffered heart failure during a police raid on her home the previous day. The violence occurred against a backdrop of significant racial tension and unrest in London and other UK cities"
Quite right about Bernard Shaw. I took my O levels in the mid sixties and The Devil's Disciple was a set text. They also made us read Major Barbara, Pygmalion and maybe others as well. All of it tripe. It's not entertaining, it's all GBS on a soapbox lecturing the audience the whole time.
