No gasses, the waste is reused, impossible to have a meltdown, can’t be weaponised, abundant supply spread evenly around the world (bye bye OPEC?), and crude oil supply is prolonged for other industrial uses (think about all the plastic the health service gets through)... To me it sounds like a no-brainer but I haven’t done a deep dive. Just thought a deep dive might be more up your street? And of course your calm appraisal of such things is well respected!

Whilst it is very much agreed that underinvestment in developing fossil fuel reserves will lead to short-term supply problems in coming years, I'm not sure rampant upticks in longer term (10-20-year) development projects are on the cards. There is a smidgeon of hope that western governments will get their individual acts together and increase the development/availability of nuclear sources of electricity by the end of this decade. Therefore, the possibility of ending up with stranded assets within the 10-15-year development cycles of oil and gas fields may deter energy companies from doing much more than developing enough to keep up with consumption.
The avoidance of stranded assets is possible with a bit of good management, and "just" needs the adoption of proper strategies for mixed-source energy provision on the part of governments....
