Dear sir, are you not aware that your unreasonable obsession with fitness, health, and longevity is a sure sign of radical right wing xenophobia and extremism?

Alternative advice on fasting and diet: OBSERVE what works best for you! I only very recently did this, and found that three eggs and bacon makes my entire day better. Then added walking the dog with my wife around dawn. Now going to consider the vinegar cider and 15min morning sunshine.

Bonus if, like me, it doesn’t take you until 50+ to learn that only your parents loved you enough to tell you what to do for YOUR wellbeing, while other authority figures tell you what to do for THEIR benefit. God bless, everyone!

I did my first ever 48-hour fast recently. One of the surprising things about fasting is that once you get over the initial hunger pang you have very little desire to eat. It shows you how lacking in willpower people generally are: the first discomfort and they're reaching for the biscuits.

That said, I'm still too often reaching for the Pilsner Urquell, so I am hardly one to talk.

Sorry to just jump on but Fasting is so profoundly akin to developing a sustainable attitude to food I’m super excited to talk about it with others. Hope it’s not too intense 😆

Pilsner Urquell is - contrary to the advertising - probably the best lager in the world

Without a doubt. Glorious stuff.

Lidl now sell Czech-brewed Staropramen which is also quite good (check the bar code, if it starts '50' then it's produced in the UK). Still not quite at the Pilsner Urquell God-tier level but many times better than the British-brewed Staropramen pish.

Thank you for this article and congrats! I'm on this journey myself and have come to the conclusion that weight loss should actually just be lifestyle change. I'm nowhere near where you are but building sustainable habits rather than trying to rush to my goal.

Fasting has been a game changer along with reducing carbs. For close to 2 years now I've eaten only two meals a day with the odd exception.

We've not used seed oils for close to a year. We stick to coconut oil, butter and olive oil. It's also amazing how much cutting down on eating out has an impact on weight loss.

Next step: Dead Hangs.

Cheers!

OK I'm toast then on the longevity front! That standing up from the ground thing is impossible!!!! (I blame all the caesarian sections - there's a disconnect somewhere......)

He is not incorrect. There is a study on it. But all bridges started with a single stone. You can’t stand up now, I couldn’t a few months ago. But with self belief and a little conviction, you will. And you will avoid a load of misery along the way. Single, slow, easy, continuous steps xx

Enjoyed your piece , most of it I knew about but whoop tripped me up . Don’t think at 68 I’ll be compliant with it and husband has been informed to secure a hanging bar for me . The kitchen door frame has been earmarked . Have been following you since covid , love ya !

Wtf is a whoop?

So how did it impact your alcohol input?

Expand full comment
Dominic Frisby's avatar

Because it measures your heart rate variability, which plummets when you drink alcohol and then you get marked really badly and as a result, you cut down on your booze

Great tips, thank you.

I’ve started with just one fast day in my first week (evening was hard… and counting calories is annoying). And the 15 minutes outside I can already feel is having a positive impact.

I’m reluctant to get a Whoop. I don’t like the idea of buying hardware that requires an ongoing subscription which can (and will) go up over time. Don’t you agree?

Dominic Frisby's avatar

I take your point but what you spend on whoop you will save on booze ;)

Thanks for sharing Dominic, good to see so many people responding. Looking after your health is a notch above looking after your wealth. All these are good tips, seed oils are poison but in everything processed. Early 40's I reversed arthritis. I write about it now. Taking responsibility for your health and wealth are empowering. Take control of both or someone/thing will do it for you. Good luck to you.

According to the chatbots, there is little evidence of long term benefits from 5:2 dieting. Always ends with the caveat… more longterm testing required. I have tried calorie counting and it works, but it doesn’t stop me putting it back in again when I reach target weight. Also some citations for the seed oil claims would be helpful.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm the same age as you and have been on a similar journey this year, I've lost 12kg. THanks for all the tips, reading this makes me want to go further.

For me, #13 would be: Eat smaller meals, less snacks, less food in general. Learn that you don't have to feel stuffed after each meal.

Have stumbled across articles linking tap water to certain illnesses. I get it in theory, but surely water was a bigger unknown before tap water…

Anyway, bought a Phox water filter and it’s excellent. I’m in Scotland, so the water tastes good anyway, but this think is a game changer.

Interesting article. Thank you.

I think in certain places like Scotland and the NW of England the tap water is fine. I can see the reservoirs where it comes from up in the Peak District. Mind you I have no proof of that, any one know of any studies about what’s in each regions water?

Expand full comment
Chris Macfarlane's avatar

It tastes fine, I’m more concerned by what’s added or any substandard pipes it has to pass through.

The (reusable) filters are under £50 for the year, so for me it’s money well spent.

BTW, somehow, the water in Berlin tasted even better…
